Detox Tea Recipe: Dandelion and Burdock Root Tea

The birds are chirping louder, the sun is beaming strong rays, and the trees and shrubs are starting to show their buds. Yes folks, spring is alive and well. Spring cleaning for your body can help rid your body of that extra weight and can help boost your energy levels!

A simple way that I like to cleanse my body in the spring is by adding a dandelion and burdock decoction (fancy word for root tea) to my daily schedule. I’m going to be completely real with you… it tastes like warm dirt water when it’s straight up. Spiking it with some honey can offset the bitter flavor a bit, BUT don’t add too much because it’s the bitter flavor received by your taste buds that signals your liver to secrete bile which aids your body in excreting fat soluble toxins. Take a peek at some of the benefits of these two herbs:

Benefits of Dandelion Root

  • REDUCES CHOLESTEROL – daily dandelion tea has been shown to help optimize blood lipid profiles
  • RICH IN ANTIOXIDANTS – helps prevent oxidative damage in cells (aging!)
  • LAXATIVE EFFECT – gets things moving along in the GI tract to help expel waste and toxins
  • SUPPORTS LIVER HEALTH – shown to have a protective effect against against alcohol induced liver damage
  • STRENGTHENS BONES – high in Vitamin K, so can help to encourage bone mineralization
  • SUPPORTS SKIN HEALTH – applying dandelion extract to the skin has shown to prevent UV damage

Benefits of Burdock Root

  • ANTI-AGING EFFECT ON SKIN – the anti-oxidants help reduce quench free radicals in the skin which will prevent aging and heal the skin
  • LYMPHATIC SYSTEM DRAINER – (lymph acts as drainage conduits and an immune cell highway) burdock root helps induce lymphatic drainage and detoxification
  • NATURAL DIURETIC – burdock consumption can naturally and easily help your body to eliminate excess water by increasing urine output
  • BLOOD CLEANSER – in traditional herbal texts, burdock root is described as a “blood purifier” or “alterative” and was believed to clear the bloodstream of toxins
  • REDUCES INFLAMMATION – burdock root has been shown to decrease inflammatory markers in the body (IL-6 and CRP) while increasing superoxide dismutase activity (SOD – a major in house anti-oxidant)
  • ASSISTS DIABETES – burdock root contains inulin, a probiotic fiber that slows glucose absorption; animal studies have also shown burdock root’s ability to decrease the severity of diabetic complications, especially diabetic retinopathy
