In honour of some PMS that I recently had the pleasure of experiencing, I thought I’d do some posts about it.
PMS: Pre-Menstrual Syndrome is a combination of physical, mental/emotional and behavioral symptoms that appear in the 4th quarter of our cycle – right before our period.
Most common physical symptoms:
✅ sleep disturbance
✅ fluid retention
✅ abdominal bloating
✅ brain fog
✅ food cravings
✅ breast pain
✅ joint pain
Most common emotional symptoms:
NOTE: If you experience one/some of these symptoms ALL throughout the month, but it’s just a temporary worsening right before your period, then it’s NOT PMS. There’s a natural increase in inflammation at the end of your cycle that can magnify other conditions in your body. If this is the case for you, then you need to search for the underlying cause instead of just treating your symptoms as PMS.
Low grade chronic inflammation from some source in your life is usually the culprit. Food sensitivities, smoking, alcohol, STRESS, trauma stuck in your body, environmental toxins, lack of sleep, and lack of exercise can all contribute to an inflammatory state in your body that prevents proper hormone signaling and can lead to the symptoms listed above.
